Essential British Books for Your Home Library
- Whether you’re an American or a fellow Brit, no home library is complete without British literature.
- Some of the best British novels and literature include Pride and Prejudice, Great Expectations, and 1984.
- Children’s and young adult books are essentials, too! A Bear Called Paddington and Harry Potter are musts for all ages.
Walt Disney once said, “There is more treasure in books than in all the pirates’ loot in Treasure Island.” We may be biased, but we believe the British have written the greatest treasures of the past few centuries (and no, we don’t just mean Harry Potter). There are loads of worlds worth exploring and adding to your collection. But where do you start? With the greats, of course! Here are the best British novels you must include in your home library.
Harry Potter Series - J.K. Rowling
We’d be remiss if we didn’t include Harry Potter on your list of essential British books online. The series follows the story of eponymous character (and America’s favourite Brit), Harry Potter, as he and his friends navigate the magical world and confront the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. More than a coming-of-age story, Harry Potter explores a range of compelling themes and life lessons, from friendship and loyalty to the complexity of good vs. evil. They’re also just plain fun, making them amongst the best British novels.
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austen

Pride & Prejudice is, without a doubt, one of the best pieces of British literature ever written. This beloved classic follows the witty Elizabeth Bennet and wealthy Mr. Darcy, who must overcome their pride and prejudice to fall in love. Although written over 200 years ago, the novel has stood the test of time due to its humorous prose and captivating blend of romance, wit, and social commentary.
A Bear Called Paddington - Michael Bond
A Bear Called Paddington is one of the best British novels for all ages! This wonderful story is about the adventures (and occasional mishaps) of an endearing bear called Paddington. In this first book of the series, Paddington from ‘Darkest Peru’ meets the Browns at Paddington Station in London and comes to stay with them. Naturally, chaos ensues!
Hamlet - William Shakespeare

One cannot list the best British literature without Shakespeare. The story follows Prince Hamlet, who seeks to avenge his father’s death after learning from his father’s ghost that his uncle Claudius murdered him. This leads to a series of tragic consequences, including the death of Hamlet himself. Shakespeare’s longest play is an exciting tale with twists and turns, so settle into a cosy corner with your favourite British tea!
1984 - George Orwell

Another of the best British novels, 1984 is a dystopian tale set in a totalitarian state where the Party, led by Big Brother, controls every aspect of thought and life. Protagonist Winston Smith rebels against this oppressive control, engages in a forbidden love affair with a woman called Julia, and joins an underground resistance group.
Great Expectations - Charles Dickens
Charles Dickens is a quintessential British author whose books are a staple in every home library. While many Brits would argue which Dickens classic is an essential, we think Great Expectations is a brilliant place to begin. This novel is the coming-of-age story of a young orphan called Pip. Pip rises from humble beginnings to become a gentleman, only to learn that wealth and social status don’t always equate to happiness or fulfilment.
It’s one of the best British novels for those seeking to explore everything from love and loss to social mobility in Victorian England.
Sherlock Holmes: The Sherlock Holmes Mysteries - Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Detective Sherlock Holmes and his loyal companion Dr. John Watson are legendary characters in both literature and film. So, of course, Sherlock Holmes Mysteries had to be on our list of the best British novels! This book introduces us to Holmes and Watson as they embark on a series of cases, filled with mystery and intrigue. It’s a must for mystery and crime fans.
